Have you always wondered if you have what it takes to be a real estate agent? There is room in this business for all kinds of personalities, skillsets, etc. but the most successful agents usually possess the following traits:
10. Problem-solver mindset. Do you enjoy coming up with creative solutions to problems? Many successful agents know how to properly showcase a listing to market the property's full potential, negotiate skillfully to create an agreement between parties, find and coordinate solutions for any repair issues or other hiccups, and stay solution-focused throughout the transaction without getting bogged down in drama.
9. Self-motivated, entrepreneurial spirit. Having a desire to control your own professional destiny and be your own boss is a plus in this business. Success in real estate requires a high degree of self-motivation, discipline, and smart decision-making to cut through distractions and prioritize the right things. This is not a career where someone is micro-managing your every move and planning your schedule - it's all up to you!
8. Honesty and integrity. Your professional reputation is crucial. Becoming a member of the National Association of REALTORS® is one way to show you practice high ethical standards since you must pledge to a strict Code of Ethics when you join the organization. Those who remain in the business for the long-haul are the agents who focus on doing the right thing every day, in every moment.
7. Hustle and tenacity. You simply CANNOT succeed in real estate if you don't put in the effort. This business requires an excellent work ethic. You must have the tenacity to pursue leads and the hustle to meet your clients' needs. It's not just about putting in a ton of time, either - it's about working smart, putting in the right amount of time, and doing whatever is necessary to be efficient and skilled.
6. Interest in houses and architecture. Having an innate interest in houses and architecture can give you an advantage over other agents, and that passion becomes apparent to the client as well. Even if you don't find it naturally interesting, knowing the difference between architectural and design features is important.
5. Engaging personality. Top agents know how to sell themselves in a way that isn't braggadocios or arrogant. People will respond naturally if you have a great attitude, are personable and honest, have confidence in your abilities, and get fulfillment by serving others. You do NOT have to be a natural extrovert to succeed in the business - plenty of introverts have skillsets that make them great at time management and logistics. If you are an introvert, you just have to make a conscious effort to learn and practice engaging with people.
4. Attention to detail. Close attention to detail is IMPERATIVE - you must be organized, diligent about lead follow-up, fluent with many forms of communication (including non-verbal forms like reading body language), and attentive to the unique needs of your clients.
3. Understanding of the local market. Top-producing agents appreciate and utilize the nuances of their local markets. Success comes from identifying and developing a focus or niche that allows you to distinguish yourself as the expert and separate yourself from the competition.
2. Network of connections. To be successful, you must develop vast network of connections in the market you serve, including other real estate agents, potential buyers and sellers, contractors, vendors, and other service providers.
1. Knowledge. Let's face it - knowledge is power! Staying up-to-date on the latest topics and events will allow you to service clients more effectively. Agents stay on the forefront of the real estate profession through continuing education, designations and certifications, and other professional development. Additionally, involvement in and attentiveness to local events, politics, and development are good ways to help clients relocate, whether outside the area or within the same market.
At the end of the day, agents get out what they put into the business. There is a certain level of investment needed (time, money, energy) to make any business venture successful, and real estate is no different. If you are passionate about real estate and have similar traits to those outlined above, you have a great shot at having a long and successful real estate career.
